Is The Netherlands the first country where Torres introduces the reusable bottles
Yes, it is. We conducted a trial with local restaurants near the winery in Spain as part of a research project called Rebovino (2022-2025), but it has not been implemented at a commercial level. Therefore, this project with Walraven Sax is our first real commercial initiative using reusable bottles and kegs, and we’re very excited about it.
When did this project start?
We started working on this project over a year ago when Walraven Sax suggested it to my father during a commercial visit. For many years and as part of our Torres & Earth programme, we have been exploring ways to reduce the CO2 emissions associated to packaging, and more specifically to glass bottles, beyond reducing its weight (98% of all the 75cl bottles we currently use at the winery for still wines are considered light bottles, that is not exceeding 420 gr.). We believe that reusing bottles for entry-level wines is an excellent way to cut down our carbon footprint. So, as soon as Walraven Sax suggested it, we worked very intensively to make it happen, with the involvement of our technical team who ensured that all internal protocols for quality and safety were met.
Is Walraven your only partner in this project?
Yes, they are. We are happy to collaborate with such a committed team. We both share rigorous quality and control standards, which gave us the confidence to go ahead with the project. In fact, the reusable bottle and keg are part of a broader sustainability strategy. Earlier this year, we, Familia Torres and Walraven Sax, also introduced wine transport by train, achieving a CO₂ reduction of approximately 35% in logistics. Both innovations are integral to the Torres & Earth programme, which aims for Familia Torres to become Net Zero by 2040. Since 2008, we have managed to reduce 40% of all our direct and indirect emissions to tackle climate change.
The wines are very nice and easy drinking. Are the grapes from own vineyards or bought? This is not so important for the project, just info for me.
Magnetic is a new range of wines we launched at the beginning of the year, intended for the ontrade channel as entry-level wines. Grenache is the main variety, blended with Sauvignon Blanc (in the white wine) and Syrah (in the red wine). The grapes come from our suppliers across Catalonia.
Will this be a worldwide project?
We would like to implement this project in other countries, provided that the necessary conditions are in place, as is the case in the Netherlands. These include having a distributor with a strong commitment to sustainability, access to a local washing and bottling facility, and a market that is already engaged in selective collection practices.
We hope that this initiative with Walraven will become a benchmark for the industry and serve as inspiration for other importers who see it as a practical and necessary solution to reduce environmental impact and promote circularity. As I stated during the presentation in Utrecht, the reusable bottle is more than packaging, it is a statement. An invitation to the entire wine world to take responsibility.
WALRAVEN SAX:
Where will the bottles be washed?
The bottles are washed locally in the Netherlands by a specialized partner who operates a professional washing line designed for reusable glass. After collection from the on-trade, the bottles are sorted, thoroughly cleaned, and inspected before they are returned for refilling. Keeping the washing process local minimizes additional transport and therefore reduces the overall carbon footprint.
How often can one bottle be refilled?
Each reusable bottle can be refilled up to 50 times. Over its full life cycle, this system reduces CO₂ emissions by around 51% per bottle compared to single-use glass, while also significantly lowering water use and packaging waste. In practical terms, one reusable bottle replaces fifty one-way bottles, a major step forward in making wine consumption more sustainable.
Can you tell something on the train transports of wine? How does this happen?
Together with Familia Torres, we introduced rail transport for our wine shipments earlier this year. Under this intermodal logistics model, trailers loaded with Torres wines leave the winery in Pacs del Penedès and are transferred onto freight trains at the Spanish-French border. The trains travel about 1,100 kilometres across France to Antwerp, after which the final leg to our warehouse in Nijkerk is completed by road.
This system allows us to reduce CO₂ emissions from transportation by around 35%, while also easing road congestion and improving overall safety. Our collaboration with Familia Torres in pioneering this more sustainable logistics approach was recently recognized with the Torres & Earth Award for Logistics, which we are very proud of. It’s a great acknowledgment of our shared commitment to reducing environmental impact.
Are the screwcaps being re-used?
No, the screwcaps are not re-used. They are, however, made from recycled material. Because of quality and sealing requirements, each bottle receives a new cap when refilled, but we make sure the materials remain part of a circular process.
How many litres contain the fust?
Each keg, or fust, contains 20 litres, equivalent to about 26 standard 75 cl bottles.
