Cristina Pinot Noir 2019 is sourced from the sustainably farmed Don Miguel vineyard, in Green Valley, the coolest, most fog influenced corner of the Russian River Valley, around 15 km from the Pacific Ocean. For this wine, the Pinot Noir clones are carefully selected to best express the vineyard’s distinctive character and its capacity to age. Following 18 months’ maturation in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new, the wine continues to evolve in bottle, gaining a firm structure and a long, silky palate. Complex and elegant, it is named after Marimar’s daughter Cristina, who has been at the helm of Marimar Estate for the past three years.
Also awarded a gold medal, La Masía Pinot Noir 2021 further consolidates its status as one of the estate’s flagship wines on the international stage. La Masía reflects the classic house style of Marimar Estate, bringing together pure red fruit character, freshness and finesse, supported by fine, well integrated tannins. Ageing in French oak adds depth and subtle spicy notes, while preserving both the expression of the terroir and the Atlantic influence on these coastal vineyards close to the Pacific Ocean.
Mas Cavalls Pinot Noir 2021 has been recognised with a silver medal. The wine comes from the Doña Margarita vineyard in the West Sonoma Coast AVA, an area defined by cool ocean breezes and morning fog, thanks to its location just 10 km from the sea. After several months in French oak barrels, the wine shows a supple, fresh profile, with ripe, seamlessly knit tannins that point to excellent ageing potential in bottle. Its name pays homage to the former horse ranch at the lower end of the vineyard, now converted into an event space.
The Global Pinot Noir Masters are part of the prestigious Global Masters series of competitions, held annually by The Drinks Business to highlight the world’s finest single varietal wines. For the Pinot Noir edition, entries are grouped by style and price bracket and assessed in blind tastings by an international panel of experts, including Masters of Wine, Master Sommeliers and senior wine buyers.
About Marimar Estate Vineyards & Winery www.marimarestate.com
Marimar Estate Vineyards & Winery, based in California, is owned by Marimar Torres, fourth generation of Familia Torres, together with her daughter Cristina, who joined the project in 2020 and now serves as managing director. Vineyard planting began in 1986, and in 1992 the winery was built in the style of a traditional Catalan masía (farmhouse).
Today, the estate comprises 32 hectares under vine, spread across two coastal vineyards in the West Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley AVAs, named Don Miguel and Doña Margarita in honour of Marimar’s parents. The winery is powered entirely by solar energy, and both the vineyards and the winery are certified sustainable by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance.
In Spain, Marimar Estate offers ten wines: the Pinot Noirs La Masía, Mas Cavalls and Cristina; the rosé Rosaleda; the sparkling Blanc de Noirs; and the Chardonnays Acero and La Masía, together with three wines made from Spanish grape varieties: Albariño, Tempranillo and Godello.
