Familia Torres, the renowned Spanish winery, and Walraven Sax, its exclusive importer in the Netherlands, have announced a joint commitment to reduce the environmental impact of wine and spirits distribution. By adopting rail transport as the main logistics solution, the partnership aims to achieve a 35% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions associated with transportation.
This initiative is part of Familia Torres’ broader climate action plan, Torres & Earth, which seeks to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040. Currently, 14% of the winery’s carbon footprint is attributed to distribution. Transitioning to rail transport represents a significant step toward minimizing this impact, as rail is a more sustainable alternative to road transport, contributing to lower emissions, reduced road congestion, and fewer accidents.
Walraven Sax is one of the winery’s first distributors to embrace this change, hiring an intermodal logistics operator to implement the new system. Under this model, trailers carrying Familia Torres wines and spirits depart from the winery in Pacs del Penedès (Barcelona) and are transferred to freight trains at the Spanish-French border. The trains then travel over 1,100 kilometers across France to Antwerp (Belgium), where the journey continues by road to Walraven Sax’s warehouse in Nijkerk.
Miguel A. Torres, President of Familia Torres, highlighted the importance of this collaboration: “Distribution is often overlooked, yet its environmental impact is significant. Securing the commitment of our distributors to adopt intermodal transport is a major milestone that will greatly contribute to achieving our emission reduction targets. I am especially grateful to Walraven Sax for their willingness to lead this change.”
Bart Gijtenbeek, Managing Director Walraven Sax, stated: “We are proud to partner with Familia Torres in this groundbreaking initiative. Corporate social responsibility is key for us. In 2022, for example, we planted 16,000 trees to offset CO2 emissions from domestic transport. Next to this, we recently introduced reusable wine bottles in the ontrade. In addition, we actively utilize inland waterway transport as a more sustainable alternative, further reducing our environmental footprint.”
Since launching Torres & Earth in 2008, Familia Torres has invested €23 million in adaptation and mitigation initiatives. In 2024, the winery achieved a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions per bottle –from vineyard to consumer– compared to 2008.
